Mechanical Engineer Caliper Life Science invents, designs, and builds tools to help scientists achieve more relevant experiments and achieve superior data from those experiments. Our products consist of electromechanical instrumentation based on conventional liquid handling, micro-fluidic, and innovative imaging based technologies as well as reagents and services. We support scientists in both drug discovery and production. This job entails providing mechanical design and support for Caliper’s integrated systems business and our manufacturing engineering group. The ideal candidate is a quick study with a broad range of experiences with electromechanical systems; possess the ability to understand system as well as component level design; can interact with customers, marketing and engineers of various disciplines to come up with design concepts; and understands manufacturing operations. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. •Working with our integrated systems group (ISG), helps define system concepts, designs extensions to current products, and works to build integrated systems performing complex assays for our customers. •Working with manufacturing engineering, works to design and redesign components, subassemblies and products as they evolve, define and design tooling to support the manufacturing of our products, and helps transition products from design to manufacturing. •Working with development engineering, participates in the design and development of complex mechanical systems, equipment and packages. •Performs structural and thermal analysis and modeling of designs. •Develops “proof of principle” breadboard systems and conducts feasibility studies and testing on new and modified designs. •Uses SolidWorks and PDM Works in performing design tasks •Creates complete documentation packages, which will include part models, assembly models, detail drawings, assembly drawings, commercial part specifications, and Bills of Materials •Checks completed documentation for accuracy, thoroughness and manufacturability. •Performs tolerance studies to assure form, fit and function of related parts and assemblies. •Confers with team members to identify and resolve design problems. •Coordinates the purchase, or fabrication, of prototype parts.
